How to Choose the Perfect Throw Pillows: A Designer's Guide

Having worked in interior design for over 15 years, I've noticed that throw pillows are often overlooked and the process of purchasing them is over simplified. Yet, they're key players in defining a space and adding personality and sometimes colour. These cushions do more than add comfort; they bring rooms together, highlighting the style and preferences of the homeowners. They can even add an artistic statement. Over the years, I've developed some guidelines to help select cushions that are both functional, aesthetically pleasing and consider sustainability:

  1. Embrace Variety: Cushions don’t need to be uniform. A mix of designs adds depth to a room. I like to have some cushions have pairs and then throw in some one off’s. It can depend how formal your room is and the style. More traditional spaces lend themselves to pairs, while casual and boho spaces prefer an eclectic mix. Do what feels good for you.

  2. Texture Matters: Opt for incorporating some solid fabrics, but don't skimp on texture or sheen. Some of my favourites are mixing velvets with linens in the same colour palette.

  3. Pattern Mix: I’m partial to mixing bold patterns. They add life to any space. Consider mixing stripes with daring florals.

  4. Play with Sizes: Mix it up with sizes. My go-to’s are 20 x 20, 24 x 24, and either 12 x 24 or 12 x 20. Have fun with them. Make sure you consider the size of your sofa when choosing the pillow sizes. Big sectionals can handle bigger pillows, while apartment sized sofas might need 20 x 20’s or a great lumbar pillow.

  5. Custom Dual Fabrics: Consider going custom with your cushions? Try using two opposing fabrics on each side to change up the look.

  6. Detailing with Piping: Contrasting piping can elevate the look of a cushion and can give a traditional pillow look a great twist.

  7. Invest in Quality Inserts: A cushion is only as good as its insert. Consider your needs, and invest accordingly. For more sustainable options go with responsible down inserts or wool- each are my favourites.

  8. Opt for Zippers: They make cleaning easier and add to the cushion's lifespan.

  9. Prioritize Fabric Safety: Safety is key. Look for certifications like OEKO-Tex Standard or go with natural and organic fabrics.

Choosing the right throw pillow can make a big difference in your space and now you’ve got my tired and true guidelines that I use when curating the perfect pillows for our clients. They’re not only an easy and effective way to refresh a rooms look and feel, they also make a statement. As you pick and choose, remember that it's about blending style with function — a well-selected pillow not only beautifies a space, but also stands the test of time.
