The Top Four Sustainable Benefits of Wool in Home Decor

Did you know that there are over 200 breeds of sheep in the world, and that only certain factories fabricate certain types of sheep wool, due to the difference in the structure of the fur itself? I had no idea of either of these facts until I took a visit to a sheep farm just north of Waterloo, Ontario, where I met Romy — sheep farmer and wool enthusiast extraordinaire.

I left that morning with one thing on my agenda — to see if we could work together to make wool inserts for my upcoming Seek Home pillow line. Little did I know that I would leave feeling not only excited about the future, but also with a wealth of information about the wool industry, process, history and capabilities. It blew my mind!

There is a very rich history of wool in Canada, particularly with our colder climate. From the creation of yarn for sweaters, wool blankets and other clothing — utilizing wool has become a part of Canadian heritage. With the introduction of synthetic fibers, wool production went to the wayside. So much so, that the majority of wool found in Canada is imported for New Zealand and Australia.

We’re beginning to see a resurgence in the Canadian wool market and product creation, and I’m excited to be part of it. There are so many more benefits to wool that often get ignored and have been forgotten due to the overwhelming push of synthetic products in home decor. Here are my top four benefits to wool that consumers need to consider:

  1. Energy Efficient: Sustainable wool production requires less energy to produce than synthetic materials, and therefore emits fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

  2. Hypoallergenic: Wool resists dust mites, mold and other allergens.

  3. Easy Care & Maintenance: Wool is naturally resistant to stains, odors and wrinkles, which makes it easy to care for. On top of that, it requires less cleaning compared to synthetic materials. Less cleaning, means less water usage and harsh chemicals.

  4. Fully Sustainable/Biodegradable: Wool products are fully biodegradable, minimizing the accumulation of non-biodegradable waste from synthetic materials.

If you’re looking for a more sustainable option for pillow inserts, blankets, and duvets that are also hypoallergenic and better for the environment, look no further than wool. Wool is the ideal alternative over polyester products. The biggest benefit of all, are these products are completely natural, which makes any consumer feel confident and able to sleep better at night knowing they’ve chosen sustainability when purchasing home decor items.

Stay tuned for the launch of my Seek Home pillow line this Fall 2023 — featuring wool inserts!
